The Anubias 'congensis' is also known as anubias 'afzelii' in aquaristics and is highly valued for its low demands. This Anubias originates from riverbanks of the Northwest African savannah areas. This 30-40 cm tall epiphyte is perfect for binding to roots or stones in the middle or background of large aquariums and tolerates soft to hard water. Anubia's 'congensis' grows in the habitat both below and above water and can even reach a height of up to one meter on land. It is therefore also suitable for terrariums and paludariums. The firm dark green and elliptical leaves of this slow-growing, robust and fairly undemanding aquarium plant are also not popular with herbivorous fish. This Anubias doesn't need much light.

Anubias 'congenis' grows as an epiphyte. Your rhizome (the green, thick rhizome) does not always crawl along the ground, but can sometimes go up. The rhizome is not planted in Anubias because it can rot in the bottom. This means that the best thing to do is to tie or glue Afzelius' spear leaf to an aquarium root or a decorative stone. If you only cover the laterally growing light roots with gravel or soil, you can also cultivate the Anubias on the ground, only the rhizome must definitely look out of the gravel or soil. This can be a finger thick!

The 35 to 40 cm tall aquarium plant looks great in the middle ground of not too high aquariums. The easy-care Anubias 'congenis' is not picky about the water values and grows quite acceptably even in low light. Due to its unpleasant taste, the Anubias is considered perch suitable. It is an easy-care all-rounder in the aquarium! If fertilised, it will help your growth so that it can even start to bloom!
